Muir Wood is the culmination of decades of adolescent treatment experience. Our clinical, medical and administrative team members are recognized leaders in the field of addiction medicine, the treatment of adolescent substance abuse, adolescent psychiatry, and early advocates for gender-separate treatment in adolescent residential settings.
Although many treatment programs promote collaboration with professional referents, Muir Wood invites referents to be involved as an active collaborator from admission.
Upon admission, our treatment team reaches out (with parental consent) to referents, forwarding a Referent Communication Worksheet welcoming them to Muir Wood, thanking them for the referral, and inquiring about their desired level of involvement in the treatment process.
We welcome referents active involvement in the treatment process if desired. We also understand that professional referents may be extremely busy and that weekly or monthly involvement may be limited. In consideration of this, involvement with the treatment team and ongoing communication with referents can take a variety of forms. On the Referent Communication Worksheet, referents can opt to receive weekly calls from the Clinical Director, Psychiatrist, Primary Therapist or Executive Director; participate in weekly treatment planning via Skype or over the phone when the team discusses their clients, receive weekly treatment team notes via email from the Primary Therapist, or simply receive the discharge summary upon referral back to their office.

Muir Wood’s extensive treatment approach combines group therapy with the many other therapeutic and experiential modalities. Based on the evidence supporting gender-specific residential adolescent treatment, our philosophy emphasizes kindness and respect over confrontation or control. We create the conditions that allow adolescent boys to feel valued and engaged. We understand the unique developmental needs of boys approaching manhood. We meet, and journey with them, in a stable and predictable home-like environment where they learn to express themselves in more adaptive and constructive ways.
In our clinically sophisticated and highly contained environment, clients learn to rely on each other, their treatment team, their family members, and, ultimately, upon themselves.
We feel honored to do this work and look forward to working collaboratively with referents and families to best achieve positive and long lasting change. Please feel free to call us directly at 855-684-7966 if you would like to schedule a visit and meet with the Muir Wood treatment team.
