Nine-Hours-Per-Week of Therapy

Our nine-hour-per-week program focuses on relapse prevention, managing emotions, and life/recovery skills. Participation in community 12-step meetings is strongly encouraged for those working on sobriety to reinforce skills learned in this program. Clients are provided two additional hours of therapy per week; one individual therapy session and one family therapy session. Parents are expected to attend Muir Wood’s virtual weekly parent psychoeducation and support groups to receive additional support and learn skills to aid in the family’s healing process.

The Muir Wood IOP program includes a Dialectical Behavioral Therapy group (DBT), a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) group, a relapse prevention and education group, process groups, and weekend goal setting/safety planning. Once-weekly drug testing is provided as needed.

Evidence-Based Groups and Other Activities Include:

Personal Inventory— This group is designed as a brief check-in to review of the events of the weekend and to set intentions for the week ahead. Clients have the opportunity to report on obstacles in their recovery, check in with program staff about impediments to their success, and identify dynamics that may need exploration in individualized sessions or particular groups in the coming week. This group helps focus clients on the impact they can make on their own recovery process.

Seeking Safety — Our Seeking Safety therapy group is an evidence-based group that helps clients with stress, trauma, and substance use disorders. Clients establish safety by exploring the impact of trauma, identifying and understanding triggers to addictive behavior, building healthy relationships, managing symptoms such as dissociation and self-harm, and restoring ideals that have been lost. Seeking Safety groups focus on coping skills in the present along with peer support.

Self and Relationships — This group offers the opportunity to reflect on all aspects of communication in which clients engage. These include peer relationships, family relationships, communications via social media and self-talk. Clients participate in experiential learning and practice integrating new skills into their relationships with themselves and others.

Process Group — This group provides a supportive setting for clients to discuss their experiences applying new skills in day-to-day life. Clients receive therapeutic and peer support in navigating the challenges of bringing therapeutic work into relationships and self-growth outside of the treatment program.

Relapse Prevention Group — This group specifically emphasizes education and skill building of both the internal resources and external support structures necessary to establish long-lasting recovery. Clients complete and present assignments that help identify the impact of their mental health and/or substance use, as well as managing high-risk situations, thoughts, and feelings. Clients learn to identify and understand triggers to instability and harmful behaviors.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Group — This group uses an evidence-based model to teach clients self-regulation skills, interpersonal effectiveness, and emotional tolerance. Combining self-assessment tools with self-soothing techniques and communication skills, this group helps clients learn how to challenge being negatively influenced by their internal emotional state and provides intervention methods to reduce harmful behavior patterns.

Clients learn mindfulness, body awareness, and therapeutic movement while exploring patterns of behavior, thinking, feeling, and actions that promote mental health.

Weekend Goals & Safety Planning Group — This group is designed as a time for reflection on the events of the week, and to set intentions for the weekend ahead. Clients have the opportunity to plan for anticipated obstacles in their recovery process, strategize solutions with therapeutic and peer support, and celebrate successes.
